Hot or Not

Hot or Not is Hailey O’Connor’s (PC ’24) Massie Block-style assessment of what’s hot and what’s not each week.

Hot:

This week started strong with Free Cone Day at Ben and Jerry’s.

I gave up dining hall dessert for Lent, so my sugar doses have been low. Perhaps that is why I have been substantially less happy these days, but we don’t need to get into that right now. However, desserts from restaurants have been a wonderful loophole to my Lenten promise.

Thank you, Ben and Jerry’s, for saving my life through triple caramel chunk ice cream with a waffle cone. I wish I could understand the business model that can support thousands of free ice cream cones from the New Haven location alone. But alas, that is a question for an econ major. As an English major, I will just write a poem, reflecting every strong emotion I have.

A haiku:

I love free ice cream
My lactose intolerance
doesn’t approve of it

Not:

I hate to pull up here and complain about dining hall food. It honestly feels tacky. But Sunday’s dinner was the straw that broke the camel’s back—it is time to gripe.

I have left my comfort zone in recent months: I tried the “kale and feta meatballs” and the “red lentil arancini.” While I acknowledge that these are some of the weakest menu items, they are relatively edible when covered in marinara sauce. (Low bar—everything is edible when covered in marinara sauce.)

But when you offer me these mysterious little spheres, with not a drop of sauce in sight, I will not be able to hide my discontent.
