The 11:26 p.m. Train

Design by Grace O'Grady

I just wanna sleep

I just wanna sleep

That lovely, lazy swing and sway

A red line winding its way

To send me back on home

I’m tired

I’m sore

But there ain’t no seats left

And I’m too worn down to stand up

So I fall to the floor for rest

I just wanna sleep

The rail is rockin’ me

Like my momma once did

My metallic bassinet

Lurching me at a bullet pace

Still as soft and sweet

As her once welcomin’ embrace

I just wanna sleep

Surrounded by crisp shirts

And polished leather cases

Pitiful folks gettin’ ready

To say “I’m Home!”

To an inanimate living room

But like a swarm of rats

We scurry into darkness

Them in their sanctioned seats

And me in the cabin’s gutter

All curled up in my little ball

Head hanging ‘tween my knees

Hands holdin my thighs ‘gainst my chest

I’m tryin’ to remember

What it was like to be a baby

In a dark car

On an empty road

In a warm seat

With a dreary

Dreamy sky

At home in this rolling car

I’m dozin’ off

      I just wanna sleep

      I just wanna sleep.
