Letter from the Editors (October 5, 2025)

Readers,

And Cod said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. Light which shone on all that Cod had thus made, the land full of trees and grasses and critters scurrying about, the skies fuller of clouds and squawking birds, the oceans fuller still of those made in His image. In this alternate aquatic Genesis, Cod rules from on high, staring with its bulging blue eyes down upon its creatures. We are its papacy; Welch A06 is its Vatican.

We know: you’re skeptical. What’s fish got to do with such a publication as ours? Frankly, nothing. But to be daring, truly daring, one must stretch the bounds of the rational. It is like a well-yeasted dough: pull it until it’s translucent, until you can see the sunrays through its lighted beige, but it will not rip. Let the reality through, but do not let your daring spirit nor your metaphors break.

With that in mind, consider this. What better to worship than Cod? Duality: a fish in its own right and the catch of the day. Cod is both so specific everyone enlightened can taste it, and so broad anyone can have the opportunity. Cod is whatever you wish it, whatever best suits your seas today, this week, this day a few weeks after last you experienced it.

So here we present you a buffet of what Cod has to offer: our catches of the last few weeks, arranged so you may taste them all.

We have Jaxon Havens on  We have a distinctly Mediterranean flavor, with Drea Cabral melding the French of de Beauvoir with the Italian of Ferrante. Dani Klein eats her therapist. Oscar Heller adds a woody flavor with his cool-ass middle school violin, Addy Gorton makes you certain you’ve tasted this before with her piece on déjà vu, Vidhi Bhartiya crafts a new flavor profile with her consideration on “Jolene” and “Gabriella.” And so many more—the delicacies are endless!

So, take a bite from each. Call it a Cod Flight, call it a hymn book, call it a metaphor gone too far—whatever you like. All we know is that we’re happy to have you on board, catching the days with us. Praise be!

Most Daringly,

Oscar and Will
