Ode to That Palimpsestic Red Minivan

Design by Emma Upson

Somewhere in this city

is a red Chrysler minivan (Town and Country, 1990-2016).

.

A while ago, probably,

someone christened it with

a pink bedazzled license plate frame

pink flames on the front doors and

two little red decals on the back window—

angel and devil, sitting back to back.

.

Not so long ago, probably,

someone was

Just Married!

and, I guess, drove away in this minivan

(with its pink bedazzled license plate frame pink flames on the front doors

and two little red decals on the back window)

.

Mr. and Mrs. Ditzel

or someone who loves them

took one of those really fat white paint pens and

Mr. and Mrs. Ditzel Just Married! Just Married

all over the red Chrysler minivan.

.

Also hearts

swirls

squiggles.

.

Not too long from now, probably,

Mr. and Mrs. Ditzel

or someone who owes them a favor

might spend an afternoon erasing

the strokes of the fat white paint pen.

(Reddit user ResponsibilitySea327 recommends

a razor blade but

Super-Blackberry19 used nail polish remover

and “did not need elbow grease.”)

Soon, probably,

only those of us who know the

pink-bedazzled-license-plate-frame-pink-flames-on-the-front-doors-and-

two-little-red-decals-on-the-back-window

of it all

will recognize the red Chrysler minivan for what it is:

a red Chrysler minivan of love.
