The Subtle Art of Hydration

Design by Michelle Lee

At Yale, hydration isn’t just about quenching your thirst—it’s a social signal, a personality marker, and even a competition. Forget your wardrobe; the real statement piece on campus is your water bottle. From Owalas to Hydro Flasks, the bottle you choose might say more about you than your major. I’ve personally fallen victim to the ever-changing water bottle trends, collecting my fair share of popular bottles along the way. Nevertheless, I persist in my journey to find the perfect bottle.

The Stanley: The Trendsetter

You can spot a Stanley from a mile away: this colorful behemoth is the ultimate hydration flex. After all, why sip from a standard bottle when you can drink from a literal tank? The Stanley joins practicality with trendiness, and it does so with a confidence that says, “Yes, I camped out at Target for hours to snag this, and, yes, it was totally worth it.” The Stanley has become rather the social currency on campus; spotting a fellow Stanley owner is like a secret nod in the hydration hierarchy, an unspoken recognition that you both belong to an elite club of water enthusiasts who take their bottle game seriously.

The Hydro Flask: Cool and Classic

If the Stanley is about jumping on the latest trend, the Hydro Flask is the seasoned veteran—the “Facebook of water bottles” that’s been a staple on Yale’s campus long before the other bottles arrived on the scene. If you’re carrying one, especially in a sleek frost or matte black finish, you’re signaling that you’ve mastered the art of being effortlessly cool. Unlike the in-your-face statement of the Stanley, the Hydro Flask doesn’t announce itself—it lets its minimalist design do the talking. Elsa Miller, PC ’28, is a Hydro Flask fan through and through. “If you get past the VSCO girl connection, the Hydro Flask is the OG. You have tons of space for both water and stickers and so many options when it comes to lids and handles.” You’ll often see Hydro Flasks covered in an assortment of stickers—remnants of high school passions, that one trip to Yellowstone, or a teenage obsession with astrology.

The Owala: The New Kid on the Block

Ah, the Owala, the water bottle taking Yale by storm. With its sleek design and dual-function lid (sip or chug, your choice), the Owala is perfect for the indecisive. Owala owners are usually ahead of the curve, the kind of people who like to be the first to discover the next big thing. Bright, bold colors—neon pinks, oranges, electric blues—make the Owala impossible to miss, and its playful design appeals to students who like to stand out without taking themselves too seriously. You’ll often see Owalas in packs: my friends and I have even dubbed our collection “Owala Nation,” proudly sporting five to eight different colored bottles at every study session in L&B. The Owala’s ability to shift between “chug” mode for quick hydration after a workout and “sip” mode during a lecture makes the bottle feel designed for the overachiever.

The Nalgene: The Granola Rebel

Nalgene bottles have long been the go-to for the outdoorsy and practical—those who kayak down the Quinnipiac River, lead FOOT trips, and know every hiking trail within fifty miles.  You’ll often spot these bottles swinging from the backpacks of students lounging in hammocks or scattered across Beinecke Plaza during sunlit study sessions. Nalgene owners tend to wear their practicality as a badge of honor. They’re not interested in the latest hydration trends—they’re more concerned with their bottle being dropped down a mountain or shoved into a backpack for a week-long camping trip. Natalie Haase, ES ’27, has had her Nalgene since 2019. “It’s lightweight, which is perfect for backpacking or hiking,” she said. “Nalgenes are a classic which is a great way to not get wrapped up in this weird water bottle culture that changes with every season.” There’s something no-nonsense about a Nalgene, and this is reflected in the type of student who carries one.

The Off-Brand Warriors: Function Over Fame

Of course, there’s always a crowd that prefers the off-brand, more low-key water bottles. These students aren’t about the hype. They’re practical and perhaps a little cynical about the whole water bottle “trend.” They don’t need to stand out in a crowd or flaunt the latest hydration trends. Their motto? “If it holds water, it’s good enough.” Sophia Wan-Brodsky, BR ’27, has had her off-the-beaten-path Contigo bottle for years. “It’s a little dented but insulates very well and does not leak at all. It’s also good for waterfalling. I don’t mind that it’s less popular because it’s less expensive.” These bottles aren’t adorned with stickers or flashy colors: they’re just reliable.
